Rationale Explanation
Design Decisions
This design was established by improving the first idea of the streetlights so that it will focus on the balance and visual clarity. The character is positioned in the middle of the lighted space to establish a great focus point and compositional balance. The buildings around are simplified and subdued to minimize distraction and in favor of visual hierarchy too. To direct the attention of the viewer, the use of a cool blue background with a warm yellow light was not a coincidence. Other features like rain and soft reflections were added to bring about motion and depth and made the scene more realistic.
Purpose
This design aims at depicting loneliness in a crowded and active surrounding. Whereas the character is encircled by lights, buildings, and rain, they are alone under one light source. This emphasizes the fact that a man can be lonely when he is not alone. The reflection under the character also adds emphasis to this point being a visual extension of their presence and adds more weight to their emotional state of introspection and loneliness.
Design Principles
A number of design principles were used in order to come up with an unified composition. The balance is obtained by the middle position of the character and by the symmetricality of the visual elements. Emphasis is created by the mix of the warm and the cool colours to create a contrast. The powerful source of light lighting on the protagonist is used to emphasize. The integrity of the work is achieved by the use of uniform colour tone and simplified forms, which makes everything pull together to convey the mood and message of the work.
Final Reflection
What have I learnt in this module?
As part of this module, I have come to understand that design is not always about visuals but about the expression of ideas and feelings. I learned the working of design principles like contrast, balance, emphasis, and unity in the design of meaningful compositions. Another thing I learned is the ability to analyze the works of art and implement them in my designs.
What did I enjoy the most?
I loved the part of researching on various ideas and transforming them into visual forms the most. Although I am not a typical sketcher, it was interesting to experiment with drawings and create my own creative process.
What did I not enjoy the most?
The thing that I did not like most is the fact that it was hard to transfer ideas in my mind into drawings. In the early days, it was not easy since I did not have visual design experience making the process more gradual and frustrating.
What have I learned about myself in this module?
I also came to know that I can be creative despite not being able to draw well. I also understood that creativity is a result of thinking, experimentation and trial of new ideas instead of being perfectionists.
What has changed and what has not in my learning journey?
I am more willing to find creative assignments and leave my comfort zone. Nonetheless, I am not yet good at drawing and I am aware that I have to practice my visual ability more.
What are my aspirations?
I would like to advance my skills of visualizing ideas and be more confident in design. I also hope to be able to further progress with my creativity and practice it in the future projects.
